Now part of the permanent collection at the Palm Springs Art Museum, the story of Albert Frey’s “Aluminaire House,” and its significance in the history of architecture is quite remarkable. If you had never seen a modern house — and most Americans had not — it probably looked like a set for a science fiction movie. Even today, it looks “like it’s from another planet,” said Palm Springs Art Museum CEO Adam Lerner. After years of negotiations and fine-tuning the logistics, the Foundation donated Aluminaire House to the Palm Springs Art Museum in 2020, which subsequently raised $2.6 million to cover the cost of its rebuilding and future care. When we saw Everlane's new collection, the messages in our style team's Slack group started flying. As always with Everlane, the thing that took us aback was how brilliantly they executed a collection that turns trendy pieces into ultra-practical staples. But this drop absolutely nailed it by releasing our favorite pieces in organic colors like sage green, sandy brown, and oyster white. Ashley Phillips, former style editor, reviewed Everlane's ReKnit mules and wrote: "This is my first pair of Everlane shoes with the brand's ReKnit material, and I love it! I really like that these mules have a cushioned footbed and a low, sturdy block heel that's easy to wear all day."

An economics expert tells BI that cash still remains crucial for "certain segments of consumers." AdvertisementWhen it comes to how Americans prefer to spend their money, cash is actually not king. That represents a consistent decline in cash payments since the pandemic in 2020, which saw many shifts in consumer behavior, including an acceleration of online shopping. The following year, the study showed that cash made up 19% of payments and has not recovered since. Cash is still king of some thingsEconomics experts say that despite increasing reliance on cards, cash remains resilient and an important payment method for many consumers.

BELLINGHAM, Wash. (AP) — Evelyn Jefferson walks deep into a forest dotted with the tents of unhoused Lummi Nation tribal members and calls out names. “It took us eight days to bury him because we had to wait in line, because there were so many funerals in front of his,” said Jefferson, crisis outreach supervisor for Lummi Nation. Against the backdrop, tribes such as the Lummi Nation, about 100 miles (161 kilometers) north of Seattle, say the proposed funding — while appreciated — would barely scratch the surface. In September, Lummi Nation declared a state of emergency over fentanyl, adding drug-sniffing dogs and checkpoints, while revoking bail for drug-related charges. But truly thwarting this crisis must go beyond just Lummi Nation working on its own, said Nickolaus Lewis, Lummi councilmember.

An academic journal publisher this week retracted two studies that were cited by a federal judge in Texas last year when he ruled that the abortion pill mifepristone should be taken off the market. Most of the authors of the studies are doctors and researchers affiliated with anti-abortion groups, and their reports suggested that medication abortion causes dangerous complications, contradicting the widespread evidence that abortion pills are safe. The lawsuit in which the studies were cited will be heard by the Supreme Court in March. The high court’s ruling could have major implications for access to medication abortion, which is now the most common method of pregnancy termination. The publisher, Sage Journals, said it had asked two independent experts to evaluate the studies, published in 2021 and 2022 in the journal Health Services Research and Managerial Epidemiology, after a reader raised concerns.

To this day, those two rules might be the best parenting advice I have ever received, delivered to me by a 5-year-old, passed down through at least three generations of her family. While not "expert," advice from family or friends offers something intangible and underestimated: it naturally comes from a place of vested interest in both parent and child. AdvertisementFor instance, when a parenting expert posts a reel detailing how to de-escalate a tantrum, she may be sitting in a cheerfully lit, clean space with no background noise. Whereas family members or close friends may try to ease FUD, parenting experts may try to capitalize on it. With this in mind we may do well to take expert parenting advice the way we should take all advice, with a grain of salt and a healthy dose of skepticism about the motivations of the person doling it out.

CNN —The academic publisher Sage Publications has retracted studies used by a Texas judge in a ruling that would suspend federal approval of the abortion pill mifepristone. The 2021 study concluded that ER visits were more likely after a medication abortion rather than a surgical abortion. Kacsmaryk cited this study to suggest that the number of adverse events from medication abortion drugs is probably under-reported. The US Supreme Court will hear arguments in March about mifepristone, one of two drugs commonly used in the US for a medication abortion. Medication abortion is the most common form of abortion in the US, and multiple peer-reviewed studies have shown that it is highly safe and effective.

A medical journal has retracted two studies claiming to show the harms of the abortion pill mifepristone, citing conflicts of interest by the authors and flaws in their research. Two of the three studies retracted by medical publisher Sage Perspectives were cited in a pivotal Texas court ruling that has threatened access to the pill. The U.S. Supreme Court will take up the case next month, with a decision expected later this year. BURMA SAHIB, by Paul TherouxGeorge Orwell died of tuberculosis in 1950, at the age of 46. The word “Orwellian” is as omnipresent as “Kafkaesque.” His two dystopian novel-allegories — “Animal Farm” and “1984” — have sold in the millions around the world.
